Battery reality: 1-2 hours of work, then swap or wait
Applies to: All humanoid owners; critical for anyone planning demos, trade-show shifts, or data-collection sessions longer than an hour
The short version
Spec-sheet runtimes are about 2 hours for a Unitree G1 (9,000 mAh / ~421 Wh), 1 hour for the R1, and 1-2 hours for the H1; heavy walking and manipulation cut that hard (Booster quotes 2 h walking vs 4 h standing for the same pack). Hot-swappable packs are the standard answer, and sustained load triggers actuator thermal shutdowns before the battery even dies.
The facts
- 01
Unitree G1: 9,000 mAh / 421.2 Wh quick-release smart battery, officially 'about 2h' runtime; the Silicon Valley Robotics Center review measured roughly 2 hours of mixed locomotion plus light manipulation, followed by about a 1.5 hour charge cycle on the official 54V/5A (270 W) charger, which itself costs about $120 at resellers.
- 02
Unitree H1 (the 47 kg full-size unit) carries a 15,000 mAh pack and delivers roughly 1-2 hours depending on gait and payload, per Robots Asia's battery guide; bigger robots do not get better runtime, they just carry bigger packs.
- 03
Unitree R1 at $5,900 runs about 1 hour per charge (CNX Software / Notebookcheck), which is why every serious R1 quote includes at least one spare battery.
- 04
Load dependence is roughly 2x: Booster Robotics quotes the T1's 10.5 Ah pack at approximately 2 hours walking but 4 hours standing (humanoid.guide), the clearest vendor admission that runtime halves the moment the robot actually moves; expect the low end of any range under continuous locomotion, stairs, or payload.
- 05
Under sustained load the first failure is usually thermal, not electrical: Reboot Hub's 2026 G1 repair guide identifies 'Actuator Thermal Shutdown' as the most common failure when the G1 is pushed beyond rated load, with the motor driver cutting power to prevent winding damage; plan duty cycles, not just battery swaps.
- 06
Hot-swap is the industry answer: Unitree's quick-release design across R1/G1/H1/H2 allows removing a depleted pack and inserting a charged one in under 30 seconds without full power-down (Robots Asia), so labs run 2-3 packs in rotation to cover a working day.
- 07
Spare pack pricing is opaque: US resellers list the G1 battery as 'contact for pricing' (RoboZaps); no confirmed public price as of July 2026, so budget it explicitly in your quote (null price, ask the reseller).
- 08
Consumer contrast: 1X NEO carries an 842 Wh pack targeting about 4 hours of typical home use at a 30 kg body weight (humanoid.guide), which is achievable partly because NEO walks slowly and spends much of its time standing; the marketing number is 'typical use', not continuous chores.
- 09
Logistics side-effect: a 421 Wh pack is far past the 100 Wh small-battery threshold, so it travels as fully regulated Class 9 dangerous goods under UN 3481, packing instruction PI 967 Section I (battery contained in equipment), which needs a dangerous-goods declaration and a DG-capable carrier rather than parcel post; what triggers a cargo-aircraft-only routing is net battery weight per package (5 kg on a passenger aircraft, 35 kg on cargo), not watt-hours, and a single humanoid pack at roughly 2.5 kg sits well inside the passenger limit.
- 10
The 30% state-of-charge cap that took effect 1 January 2026 applies to loose batteries and to batteries packed WITH the equipment, not to a pack installed inside the robot, where a reduced state of charge is strongly recommended but not mandatory (IATA 2026 lithium battery guidance); that is why adding a LOOSE SPARE pack to the crate, rather than the robot itself, is what restricts the routing and is the classic trigger for a refused booking.
