Poppy Humanoid
A 84 cm, 3.5 kg open-source, 3D-printed humanoid with a uniquely articulated 5-DOF spine that ships as a build-it-yourself kit of Dynamixel servos and printed parts, made for robotics research and the classroom rather than for doing chores.

No hands, none offered
Poppy Humanoid's arms have shoulders, elbows and wrists driven by Dynamixel servos but end in simple fixed, non-actuated end-effectors. There are no articulated fingers or grippers, so it cannot grasp or manipulate objects out of the box. Grippers would be a custom, community, or third-party add-on.

Reality check
This is a self-assembly research kit, not a product: it arrives as parts you spend a day building, it can't walk or grasp, and by the time you've bought all 25 Dynamixel servos you're near ten thousand euros for a benchtop platform whose value is that it's completely open and hackable.

Yes, with work: importable into United States.
US authorization: We found no public FCC ID for this model. Since 28 July 2026 a foreign-made robot can be sold into the US only under an FCC authorization from before that date, so ask the seller for its FCC ID, or its Supplier's Declaration of Conformity dated before 28 July 2026, before you pay.
Spare batteries and other accessories are excluded. Confirm compatibility and pricing with the seller.

Sold openly as an education/research kit with no restrictions listed. In practice buyers are universities, schools, labs, and hobbyist makers, because assembling and programming it demands technical skill. It is also fully open source, so a determined builder can source the bill of materials and 3D-print the parts themselves without buying the kit at all.
Price notes: Génération Robots lists the complete Poppy Humanoid kit with 3D-printed parts at EUR 9,971.52 incl. VAT (EUR 8,310.02 excl. VAT, includes EUR 2.50 ecotax). The version without 3D-printed parts is EUR 7,862.40 incl. VAT (EUR 6,552.28 excl.). Both were listed out of stock with a 4-6 week delivery lead time. The open-source community bill-of-materials self-build is often cited around USD 8,000-9,000, with roughly 60% of that being the 25 Dynamixel actuators.

What it does on day onewith zero programming
Nothing, until you build it: it arrives as a bag of servos, electronics and 3D-printed parts that you assemble over several hours. Once assembled and flashed with the provided SD image, it powers up as a live, torque-controlled 25-DOF humanoid you can pose, teach movements to by hand (compliant/record-and-replay), stream motor and camera data from, and script immediately from a browser via Python/Jupyter. It does not walk, balance, or grasp on its own.
Best for: University robotics labs, developmental-AI researchers, and advanced STEM educators who want a fully open, hackable, Python-programmable humanoid platform to experiment on and are comfortable assembling and coding it themselves.
Documented uses
Robotics R&D / Teaching / education / Learn and tinker
The Poppy project provides a modifiable open platform for educators and robotics researchers.
This is an assembly and programming platform. It does not provide autonomous household or warehouse work.
Source reviewed 2026-09-09Assessment from published documentation, not an independent performance test. Applies to the configuration described above.
What it takes to developskills, gear, and SDK access
Assembly skills (about 7 hours of careful building), then Python. Programming is done over WiFi/USB from a host computer through Jupyter notebooks using the pypot library and the poppy-humanoid package (pip install poppy-humanoid). Comfort with Raspberry Pi, terminal, and servo/robotics concepts is expected. Visual programming (Snap!) exists for classroom use.
