About the Tonybotbackground, hardware and buying reality

Tonybot is Hiwonder's educational humanoid. It has 17 DOF (the docs page says 16 servos), LX-824HV 11.1 V bus servos, a servo controller plus an ESP32 expansion board, an 11.1 V 2000 mAh battery and an aluminium alloy body. It is controlled by Bluetooth or PC software. The standard kit is the bare robot with ultrasonic sensing; the advanced kit adds the ESP32-S3 vision and WonderEcho voice modules; the Ultimate kit adds a large-AI-model module with camera and LCD. Hiwonder also sells a Raspberry Pi based humanoid, TonyPi Pro, for vision work. The Arduino claim is true for programming, but the robot runs on an ESP32, not an Arduino Nano.

What it does on day onewith zero programming

Walks, turns, dances and does gymnastics from pre-programmed action groups, controlled by Bluetooth app or PC software. Ultrasonic distance sensing, accelerometer fall recovery and touch sensing as documented. Voice and vision need the advanced or Ultimate kit.

Best for: A student, teacher or hobbyist who wants a low-cost humanoid for learning servo control and light AI with Arduino, Scratch or Python.

Documented uses

Teaching / educationLearn and tinker

Hiwonder describes the robot as 'designed for educational purposes' with Arduino, Scratch and Python tutorials, full source code and a public wiki.

No grippers, no ROS, and vision, voice and AI features need the higher kits.

Source reviewed 2026-11-03

Assessment from published documentation, not an independent performance test. Applies to the configuration described above.

What it takes to developskills, gear, and SDK access

Arduino IDE (C/C++) with an ESP32 controller, Scratch blocks, or Python. A PC for the graphical action-group editor. Basic coding skill for anything beyond the preset actions.

SDK access: Hiwonder says full source code, schematics and video guides are public at wiki.hiwonder.com/projects/Tonybot. Arduino, Scratch and Python are supported. No ROS documented. Control chip is an ESP32 with a separate bus-servo controller, with LX-824HV high-voltage bus servos.
