Reality check
It is one of the most genuinely open platforms you can buy, but it is a Linux-and-terminal research bench, not something that does anything useful around a house.
Can you get one, and what will it cost?
A planning estimate with machine, freight, duty, and tax shown separately.
Yes, with work: importable into United States.
US authorization: We found no public FCC ID for this model. Since 28 July 2026 a foreign-made robot can be sold into the US only under an FCC authorization from before that date, so ask the seller for its FCC ID, or its Supplier's Declaration of Conformity dated before 28 July 2026, before you pay.
Spare batteries and other accessories are excluded. Confirm compatibility and pricing with the seller.

Overwhelmingly bought by universities and RoboCup teams.
Price notes: en.robotis.com lists the OP3 at $11,969: the US-spec unit is orderable with a 10-day lead time, while the international (INTL) unit is out of stock; ROBOTIS America's own US store is sold out at $13,764 (all checked 3 Oct 2026). There is no European product listing: ROBOTIS's own international store ships worldwide from Korea, so a European buyer imports rather than buying locally. The 2025 re-release is rebuilt for ROS 2 with XM430 Dynamixel actuators and an Intel NUC i3.

What it does on day onewith zero programming
Ships with working RoboCup soccer and vision demos (ball tracking, kicking), walking gaits, and full example stacks. It is the reference kid-size platform, but expect a Linux terminal, not a phone app.
Best for: University coursework and RoboCup teams that want a fully open, torque-controlled bench platform.
Documented uses
Robotics R&D / Teaching / education / Learn and tinker
ROBOTIS documents a ROS development platform with actuator control and research-oriented hardware.
This miniature platform has no functional grasping hands. Development and maintenance need technical skills.
Source reviewed 2026-09-09Assessment from published documentation, not an independent performance test. Applies to the configuration described above.
What it takes to developskills, gear, and SDK access
Linux + ROS 2, C++/Python. Self-contained Intel NUC compute onboard; a GPU workstation is only needed for learning-based research.
SDK access: Fully open source in hardware AND software, alongside Fourier N1 the most open commercial platform here: 20 torque-controlled Dynamixel actuators, OpenCR sub-controller, complete docs. The 2025 re-release is native ROS 2.
