Grippers, not dexterous hands
Each arm ends in a parallel gripper with one degree of freedom (Lightberry's hardware docs). They suit handing over a flyer or a gesture, not dexterous manipulation; Lightberry publishes no grip force or payload.

Reality check
It is a Unitree G1 with Lightberry's head, sensors and software at almost three times the base G1's price, the price covers only one year of the software that makes it Lumi, and no buyer has posted a delivered unit yet.

The order page takes the $200 deposit with no business or research check, though Lightberry says it sells Lumi directly to businesses with non-technical teams.
Price notes: $39,990 for the Founder Edition, a first run of 100 units, reserved with a $200 deposit that Lightberry calls fully refundable (order page, read 5 Nov 2026). It includes 1 year of Lightberry software access, which Lightberry values at $20,000, and direct Slack support; the price of the software after that year is not published. Lightberry says it will bring hardware pricing into the $20,000 range after the 100 units.

About the Lumibackground, hardware and buying reality
Lightberry, a San Francisco start-up led by co-founder and CEO Ali Attar, unveiled Lumi in late August 2026 as 'the world's most interactive robot'. On 30 October 2026 the FCC exempted the Lumi line from its Covered List after the Department of War granted it a Conditional Approval (Public Notice DA 26-1181), the only humanoid among the twelve robot lines approved by then. Lightberry says it won the approval with two commitments: replacing the G1's sensors, onboard computer and software with its own, and building Lumi in the US, starting with the body, head and hands; the approval is tied to that plan and to ongoing vetting. Lumi has 34 degrees of freedom (3 in the head, 3 in the torso, 7 per arm, 6 per leg and a 1-DoF gripper per hand), weighs about 40 kg and runs 2.5 to 3.5 hours on a 421 Wh battery.
What it does on day onewith zero programming
Lightberry says Lumi works from the moment it arrives with no robotics team: it talks with people, answers questions, tells stories, takes photos, looks up information and guides visitors, and you change its personality, voice and knowledge by talking to it. Perception and motion run on the robot; understanding and planning run in Lightberry's cloud agent.
Best for: Venues, events, retail and hospitality teams in the US that want a talking, photo-taking humanoid host that works without a robotics team, and buyers who need a humanoid cleared under the FCC's foreign-robot rule.
Documented uses
Lightberry's product page and its 30 October 2026 release describe Lumi as a robot for venues and events that holds conversations, answers questions, tells stories, entertains a crowd, takes photos, looks up information and guides people, sold to businesses with non-technical teams.
The Founder Edition ships 'in 2026' with no date and no buyer has posted a delivered unit; understanding and planning run in Lightberry's cloud agent, so it needs a network connection, and the price includes one year of Lightberry software access.
Source reviewed 2026-11-05Assessment from published documentation, not an independent performance test. Applies to the configuration described above.
What it takes to developskills, gear, and SDK access
Nothing for the built-in behaviours beyond a network connection. To add your own, write extensions (Lightberry recommends containers) that run on the robot's Jetson Thor beside Lightberry's software and connect through the Lightberry SDK.
SDK access: Lightberry SDK and a documented extension model: your code runs on the robot's custom Linux (based on NVIDIA Jetson Linux 39.2, with CUDA 13.2 and TensorRT 10.16) next to Lightberry's software, which keeps the sensors, compute and cloud agent. Lightberry replaced the G1's sensors, onboard computer and software with its own as part of its US approval; low-level joint control is not documented.
