Reality check

It is the R1 most dealers sell, but it is a sealed demo machine with a one-hour battery: if you want to write code for it, only the R1 EDU allows that.

Unitree (legal name Hangzhou Yushu Technology) listed on Shanghai's STAR Market on 19 August 2026, raising about 6.1 billion yuan. Its shares are A shares quoted in yuan; investors outside mainland China need a broker that offers them, for example through Stock Connect.

About the R1background, hardware and buying reality

Unitree launched the R1 in July 2025 at $5,900 (RMB 39,900) and began shipping it from stock in mid 2026 after the promised start moved from April to May to June. It shares its 1230 x 357 x 190 mm body with the cheaper R1 Air and the programmable R1 EDU. Unitree's manual rates the battery at about one hour (194.4 Wh, about 1.5 hours to charge), the operating range at 0 to 40 C, and states that the robot is not waterproof and is intended for industrial and commercial settings. Warranty is 8 months from receipt, with falls on level ground and damage in developer mode excluded.

What it does on day onewith zero programming

Walks, runs, gets up after a fall and performs Unitree's preset motions (dances, kung fu, handstands) from the handheld remote or the phone app, and holds voice and image conversations through its onboard multimodal AI. Compared with the Air it adds a 2-joint waist, a 2-joint head and a depth camera. It runs Unitree's programs only.

Best for: Events, showrooms, schools and enthusiasts who want an agile walking humanoid to demonstrate, not to program.

Documented uses

Demo / showpiece

Unitree sells the R1 as a demonstration machine: its specification table and its IPO prospectus give secondary development to the EDU edition only, and the base R1 runs walking, running, dancing and interaction programs from standard commands.

Custom development requires the separately priced R1 EDU. Unitree's manual states an intended use in industrial and commercial settings and about one hour of battery per charge.

None applicable: the R1 cannot run your code. Programming requires the R1 EDU.
